Salmon River Fishing

Redline Sportfishing Charters

Well it's been a while but things are still the same.

Fishing on the Salmon River right now might be a little tough until the water clears up a bit and it will be best fished from the boat due to the high flow caused by all the rain and snow melt. Fishing continues to be ok some days and pretty good others. Now that the creeks are open it time to get back to them for some fresh chrome. Wait till it comes down a bit and it will be very good.

Pink worms, trout beads, Stone flies, and a few other secrets are catching a few every day. The temps are suppose to get cold by the weekend which should slow things down a bit.

The lake season is getting closer by the day and my schedule is filling up pretty fast.I am currently recieving numerous calls regarding salmon fishing in August and September. If thats in your plans, PLEASE DON'T WAIT to call. But you could beat the rush and book a trip in July when we have plenty of kings around and some pretty nice weather.

Dates for April and May are filling in as well. It won't be long till we slip the boat back in the water and start searching the shallows of Mexico Bay for those jewels of spring. Spring never seems to get here soon enough but when it does we will be ready. For those of you with dates booked deposits are due now so I would appreciate it if you could send them along. News letters will be out soon.

Goose hunters. Remember we are booking hunts for the 2010 September goose season. 8 Birds per man now would be a good time to schedule a fishing and hunting combo.

Look at the Ice out on the lake doesn't make you feel like spring will ever get here. Redline Sportfishing Charters I will be in Harrisburg again this year in the fishing hall.

Salmon River NY Fishing Report

Fishing continues to be very good as we move into November. Plenty of steelhead around. The water is running at 335cfs but with the expected rain over the next couple days it should be on the rise. Looks like tough huntin weather for the second part of the goose season. We currently have over ten thousand Canadas in the area right now. Could be some interesting hunts in the coming weeks.

Egg sacs in blue, pink, white are working as well as egg pattern flies and trout beads. Look for the steelies in the faster runs until it cools down some more. Some trolling is being done from Mexico Point to the Salmon River for steelhead. Try any bright colored lures, Orange, Red, Pink are working the best off planer boards.

Book your 2010 dates now for the best dates, I recieve alot of calls for August and September early so don't wait. May Brown Trout fishing is filling in faster than normal for this time of year. Its just around the corner. Call Now!!!

Salmon River Fishing is ON FIRE!

Redline Sportfishing Charters

The Salmon fishing has been very good over the past 2 weeks. It started a bit slow up top but has picked up good over the past week. The rain has helped to get the fish moving up stream, and now with the river at 750 going too 1100 tonite things should be as good as it gets. There seems to be several steelhead moving through now with the water flow increase. Here are a couple shots from the past few days

I still have several good dates open in October for kings and late in the month for trout. November is just around the corner and that means the best time to get into fresh chrome. June 2010 special Book any two days at 8 hours per day for 850.00

Goose hunting on the last day of the early season was awesome!!!! the best day I have ever had in over 20 years of hunting them. We had at one time over 300 hundred birds trying to land in the decoys. Overcast skies and a good breeze from the north helped put thousands of migrating geese in the sky and hundreds upon hundreds of local geese in the air and trying to get in our spread. Call now for the 2010 season dates or too get in on the rest of 2009.

The salmon are in close, 10-40 fow. J-plugs and spoons are doing alot of the work right now. The early morning and late evening bite have been good. The salmon are moving pretty good in the river. Daily reports of fish being caught from the bottom to the top. The DSR is fishing good and reports of good runs moving in everyday.

Back to the goose fields this am to take advantage of the recent flights of migrating geese coming down from the north and the farmers are starting to harvest there corn now, which is giving the geese more options for feeding.

We set up today about a mile from the farm that the geese wanted to be on and worked hard to get the birds to come to our spread. Bob managed to get his limit today by 8:30. Soaking wet we picked up our decoys and headed off to find the next field to plan a hunt for Friday.

The early goose season ends on Friday but opens back up on the 24th of October and continues in to December. I have several good days open for goose hunting and steelhead fishing in late October and November. Here is what I have left for September 2010 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15, call me asap to reserve your 2010 date.

Ron and Charlie wanted to get in on the early goose season while in the area fishing. We aranged to meet at 4 am and head off too the goose field. Our morning shoot could'nt have gone better. They had there limit of 16 geese by 9:30 am and it would have been sooner if the guys that jumped them off the roost pond wouldn't have messed things up. If you want to keep birds in the area in the early season never shoot them on the roost, thats thier safe haven. Oh well we still had plenty of good shootin. The fishing in the Mexico Bay area is about as good as it gets!! The night bite has been the best from the power plant to the North Dune area. Flasher fly combos are working the best and J-Plugs are starting to get their fair share of action. Green/Green, White/ Hammer, and Chrome/ Big fin flasher fly combos have been best. Silver Bullet and Green glow j-plugs have been good. Pro-Trolls seem to be the hot item right now.

We recently placed a 32.08 lb salmon on the leader board which was caught by a Newbie to Lake Ontario. Robin Blose and her husband Dennis made the trip to the lake based on the advice of Dennis Buck to try the derby for a couple days and it paid off. Robin caught her big fish on a A-TOM-MIK trash can green edge dodger trailing a B-FLY, 177 feet out behind a kelly green Luhr Jensen Dipsy Diver using segaur flourocarbon and a clear opti snubber. This rig was given to me a couple years ago By TOM ALLEN owner of A-TOM-IK trolling flys and he said run it on a diver and tell me how many kings you catch on it, four days and 21 kings later I gave it back at his request. I duplicated the rig and have taken three fish on it over thirty pounds to date.

Still working the 150-200 fow area north of the Salmon River using Spin doctors whith hammer flies or big fin flies. Divers out 250-300 have been working well. We are still catching very good numbers of browns in the shallower water, mostly spoons but a few attractor fly combos are working. Fishing over the past few days has been tough for most. The kings seem to disappear but the browns are there for the catching. We have spent a few hours each day fishing kings with limited success. 2-4 salmon are the norm for right now. Once we get away from the full moon it should pick up pretty good.

Some action for kings has been from 140-220fow down 95-150. Still mostly spin doctors and pro trolls in white and green. White flies or green flies from ATOMMIK are working well. The browns seem to be holding pretty steady right now, we will continue a few more days on browns but switch to full salmon mode shortly.

Spin Doctors and Pro Trolls in Green White and Chrome have been the best. The best flies have been the Hammer,Bfly,White Halo, Ultra Green glo all from A-TOM-MIK. Well over the past few days things have been pretty decent. Temps came up some with the east and south winds moving the kings around a bit. We did manage to find them every day. 160-220 fow has been the hot spot right now north of the Salmon river. There are a few fish in 100-130 as well and it seems to be bigger fish but we did well today on some nicer fish in 220-270fow.

Chrome and White ProTrols have been good with green glow, white halo,TG or the red's fly behind the attractors. Some Spoon action as well. Mag size seems to be the best in the Diehard pattern. Down speed has been 1.9-2,25 depending on direction, 400,450,500,600,sections of copper are all taking fish.

Things in the bay area are looking pretty good for the up coming salmon season. Right now the kings seem to be in the deeper water off the power plant but there are some fish being caught in the 120-150 range right out front.

I have been staying out in the deeper water looking for kings because it seems more stable and you don't have to fish as deep to get to 42-46 degree water where they live most of there lives. Green ,white, chartreuse Pro-Trolls or White Green dot spinnies are working with Green glow, Green Krinkle, Hammer,Glow B flies from A-TOM-MIK . Speed should be kept between 2.0-2,25 on the moor.

I only use the 20# wire from A-TOM-MIK it is the thinnest diameter and gets down deep for deep fish. We hit bottom with this stuff in 103 fow with 270 feet of wire out on a LJ diver set at 1.5. 500 and 600 copper are taking there share as well, I run three coppers most of the time, 1 with a spoon and 2 with attractor fly combos. Now that June is almost past us for another year, it's time to think summer fishing on Lake Ontario. The thermocline has just started to set up, the brown trout are focused on all the bait that has showed up in the bay and the kings and steelhead are just a bit deeper feeding on the huge schools of bait suspended in the water column.

Over the past few weeks we have been concentrating our efforts on Browns in the shallower water 12-25 fow using blk/silver orange bellied smithwicks and several dreamweaver super slims. Blk/spook, Gator,Diehard, Daves salmon slapper.

The kings have showed up again and are staying in the 100-150 fow range. Spin doctors with Green Krinkle and ultra green glow flys from ATOMMIK are working the best fished between 55-105 down on the riggers as well as off the divers out 175-280.

We didn't set the world on fire but we managed to find some quality trout and I told him that if we worked the structure hard on money day we would be there for a pay check. Well it all came true on Saturday, we gave it our best effort under unfavorable lake conditions ( 3'-5') waves we ended the day in fourth place and a check for 320.00. Not bad for a 50.00 gamble.

We found the between 120-200 fow down 65-110 on the riggers. They seemed to like Dreamweaver Standard size frog spoons and Green Dolphins. 2.25 on the MOOR SUB TROLL was the best down speed. The steelies where found in the 5 color core area as well as the A-TOM-IK 250-300 copper range pulling orange crush spoons. We also caught a few brown trout while targeting kings.

The fishing around the Mexico Bay area of Lake Ontario continues to be very good. We are still catching Brown Trout in the shallower water 10-25 fow using Smithwicks in blk/silver and blue silver as well as Daves Kabooms in the pink sunset. Dreamweaver super slims on the riggers fish 2-15 feet down are working well. Daves salmon slapper, blk/icicle, diehard, and frog glow are working the best. Three colors of lead are working good as well. Most days trolling speeds of 2.5-2.8 are working. Sunny calm days are tough but the shore line from Snake Creek too Sandy Pond has been very good.

Redline Sportfishing Charters

The salmon continue to be found in the off-shore waters from 80-200 fow from Catfish Creek to Oswego. Fished 45-110 feet down trolling super slim dreamweavers in diehard patterns and the standard size. Dreamweavers in frog, green dolphin, Blk/Silver. Speed has been around 2.0-2,25 on the MOOR SUB TROLL. The best action is early on flat sunny days but if there is a little chop or over cast skies it seems too last longer.

Spent yesterday afternoon filming another episode of Alan Probst All Outdoors. Things couldn't have gone any better.

We stayed in shore due to the high winds blowing off shore. As evening settled in the winds subsided so we moved out a bit and found a bunch of steelhead up to 12 pounds, brown trout up to 8 pounds, an Atlantic that was a very nice bonus that weighed 11 pounds and a few lakers up to 10 pounds.

Dreamweaver Super Slims in blk/icicle or diehard worked for spoons and Daves Kaboom copper and black worked as well as Smithwicks in Blk/Silver or Blue silver. Riggers set 15-25 over 45-55 fow and the boards where good as well. 2.4-2.6 sog off pleasant point.

The brown trout fishing continues to be excellent, After canceling my trip for sunday due to very high winds we got back out today and manage to find the brown trout stacked up in 12-18 fow just west of the Mexico point boat launch.

Blue and silver smithwicks and shallow set Dreamweaver super slims did the trick today. We moved out a little later to see if we could find a king to end the day but they didn't want to play. They are there and in good numbers. I hope they stay around for the rest of the year.

Browns and Kings

Redline Sportfishing Charters

Today was day two for Jack and the gang. We started in close for browns and worked our way out for kings. The brown trout bit good until the north east wind came up. Black and silver smithwicks on the boards and some Dreamweavers mied in and Dream weavers on the riggers set 5-18 feet down over 40 fow.

Redline Sportfishing Charters

We changed things up increased our speed more for kings up to 2.7 -2.9 sog and tried to find them again today. No luck just one small one, but we did score on the steelhead. Orange jointed # 9 rapalas and blk/silvr Dreamweaver spoons with a little weight off the boards did the trick. Locating them was easy today due too the calm conditions that we had too start then the wind picked up and our pot off gold dried up.

Redline Sportfishing Charters

Try fishing the deeper water and look for slicks on the surface with junk in them and you should find some steelhead. Still taking reservations for the season. Call too schedule your trip dates are filling up fast. Walleyes tonite I will report in the am

Mexico Bay full of BROWN TROUT

Redline Sportfishg April 2009 Brown Trout

The fishing in the bay has been AWESOME!!! We are seeing some of the best brown trout action we have had in a long time. Many days we are catching between 20-35 browns. Thats fish in the net. We lose a few to boot. Some Landlocks and a few steelies mixed in. It's been a near shore program every day (4-12 feet). We are trolling stick baits and starting to mix in some Dreamweaver SS spoons.

Redline Sportfishg April 2009 Brown Trout

This year is the first year for us running DREAMWEAVERS in the spring and they sure seem to be a brown trout favorite. Blk/slvr and green /slvr seem to be very good. Trolling speed seems to very most days but 2.4-2.9 sog seems to be very good. Run these spoons back 150'-200' of the planer boards or put your riggers down 2'-5'.

Redline Sportfishg April 2009 Brown Trout

The area around Catfish Creek seems to be very productive. Look for stained water and the warmer the better. The browns are starting to spread out a little bit now that the water is warming. It couldn't be a better time to book an early spring trip for this hot action. We should see good trout fishing through the summer due to the number of fish in the Bay.

The steelhead are just down right on fire in the river. Loads of drop backs to be caught on just about anything you choose. Egg sacs, worms, plugs, flies, spinners, they are hungry. This will be good right into mid-May. With the warm weather here why wait till next year, give me a call and get in on the fun.

Rich Wallace and crew came for there usual spring trip and went home with big smiles. Joe Jackson and crew came and couldn't believe they could catch so many Browns in just and hour and a half. The fishing is so good we haven't been leaving the dock till 7-8 am most days or later. One trip we pulled out of the slip at ten and had a 4 man limit in just 1 hour not bad. I timed it the other day and we where fishing 4 minutes before we had our first fish. Talk about action.

High Water Plenty of Fish!

The recent warm snap has created a high water condition on the salmon river. This can only mean one thing MORE FISH. Any increase in water flow this time of year means fresh fish in from the lake. It makes it a little tougher wading, but thats no concern from the drift boat.

The fishing remains good and should stay this way for the rest of the season. Fresh steelies are entering the river on a daily basis due to flow. We are still doing well under floats using blue, white, pink egg sacs and the pink worm is starting to work well. All the usual winter holding spots have fish, school house, wire hole, trestle pool, frig. The lower end will have alot of fresh fish and a mix in the mid part of the river.

The snow is a non-issue at this time so getting around is no problem, and the parking lots are all clear.

Lake fishing dates and river dates are still available but some of the best dates are going fast, weekends fill up quick as always.
