Plenty of geese in town as well as steelhead

The 2010 regular goose season opened on the 23rd of October and things couldn't have started better. After scouting all week leading up to the opener I had the geese pretty well patterned and thought we would be in good shape. Well I love it when scouting pays off.

The birds started flying everyday about 7:45 and on sunny days quit about 8:35. On overcast days the flying continued till 9:30. I knew with all the hunters in the area and forecast rain it would keep birds flying most of the morning. Well we didn't need them too fly long as we filled our limit of birds each day with canada geese and a few mallards mixed in.

Redline Goose Hunts

The coming weeks will produce limits of birds each day and mixed in ducks. Full body Avery Fully Flocked decoys draw them in close enough too shoot with a 410. If you want too get in on the action give me a call. Try a cast and blast hunt in the morning for giant Honkers and fish steelhead till dark. What a way to enjoy a fall day. In November we are offering $20 per night p/p lodging. Hunt for canada geese for $175 per day, lodging included per person minimum 2 hunters per day.

Redline Goose Hunts

The steelhead fishing continues to be very good as the salmon are winding down. The past few days we have fished we spent time on the Salmon river for steelhead and the area tribs as well on foot. Temps here are still warm, so get here now to enjoy a beautiful fall day fishing from the drift for trophy class steelhead.

Fishing continues...

Redline Goose Hunts

The fishing continues on the river and local tributaries in full swing. The salmon are starting to slow down but the steelhead fishing continues too entertain many anglers. The fish are spread out through the entire coarse of the river. Good steelhead fishing has been in the little black hole to the 81 hole. Ballpar, town pool and the Nymo parking lot area has been good. The steelies seem to be holding in the fast water. Moving up the river the sportsman, glass compactor, areas have been good. Once you move above Pineville look for steelhead in the unemployment hole barrel and muskrat.

Redline Goose Hunts

Beads seem to be working very well The new apricot iredescent 10,8 mill beads under floats are doing there damage. Egg sacs in blue are working as well. Fish the seem edges for best action.

Redline Goose Hunts

This weekend goose season opens again and there are tons of geese in the area. I am scouting daily and things are looking very, very good. Due to all the rain we have had several fields I hunt are flooded and the corn is still standing. Tons of ducks are working these flooded areas and there are many ducks working the same fields the geese are. The field I am hunting on the opener has about 3,000 -4,000 canadas using it right now. I still have open dates for this coming season $200.00 per hunter with lodging per day.

Well it always happens this time of year and this year was no different. THE MIGRATORS SHOWED UP. We didn't shoot as many as we had hoped but still plenty of action here in Upstate NY. On a blue bird 70 degree day you don't expect much, but today was one of those days. Even with the high sun, the geese worked our greenhead full body decoys too perfection. Tony and Mike enjoyed thier time in the field today shooting some nice fat Canada geese. Two more days of the early season then it wait till October 23 for the late opener.

River Report
Many salmon have entered the river but are spread from top too bottom and not hot in anyone area. Things should pick up over the coming days.

Upstate NY fishing and goose hunting

Well the lake season is winding for me but it ended with a bang. After struggling to put fish in the boat after the big winds of Labor day and the terrible winds that followed. We headed deep to find many nice Cohos and some juvie kings that wanted to play. Most of our action in the past few days has come from the 120-160 fow range down 125 area on the riggers. 500 copper was our hot item using an all red pro trol with a flat green howie fly. 300 divers with green pro trol green glo atommik.

Things will slow down on the lake but pick up in the tributaries. Recent flow increases in the salmon river and other tribs have brought good numbers of trout and salmon in. Good numbers of steelhead have been showing up as well. I have open dates for salmon season as well as steelhead season.

The Canada geese are here and plenty hitting the ground under our gun barrels. The numbers are increasing but days left in the early season are coming to a close. The early season closes the 25th then we wait for the second half in October. Field hunting giant canadas is a great time. Come and enjoy upstate New Yorks most productive area.

Redline Goose Hunts

Today Claude Mayne joined me on a hunt and his aim was true and he walked away a box of shells short and a limit of birds. Close too 600 hundred birds worked our greenhead gear ffd's. Don't wait for 2011 to book your fishing trip or hunt call now to reserve the very best dates

Lake Ontario Fishing Season Ends

The lake season has come to a close. Good thing it has. Its been the toughest fall salmon season this end of the lake has seen in many years. The good news is. next year should be one of the best in a while and we will be able to say it is better than last year.

Lake charter dates are filling up pretty fast. I am running a special on 4 hour charters in August for 2011: $250.00 for up to 4 people. If your passing through this is the perfect chance to sample the lake in 2011.

The river has had some real good salmon fishing from top to bottom. I floated the river from Altmar to Pineville and saw plenty of fish, but it's not the peak of the season yet. Night fishing has been good when we can get out. Casting at the river mouth has been good as well at night. River dates filling in call now to book your salmon or steelhead trip.

Goose hunting has been very good and we are seeing good numbers of geese and more are coming everytime we get north wind. We have a couple days open next week September 20,21,22. Perfect chance for early season gunning. The late season will open in October and good numbers of geese will arrive and we will be ready to greet them when they get here. We are going to offer some early season snow goose hunts in mid to late October. Call now to schedule a trip this fall or get the jump on 2011.

Riggers divers coppers lead core have all helped to put fish in the cooler. Spin Doctors and Pro-Trols with hammer, green glo, ace, hypnotist, mirage flies with 22-23 inch leaders have been the best.

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

The Brown Trout fishing continues to be very strong. Most of our fishing is taking place about 2 miles from the river mouth. The brown trout seem to be keeping most of the boats entertained. There have been some real nice trout coming too the net.

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

Dreamweaver Super Slims in carmel dolpin and blue dolphin have been doing the damage. Some bigger spoons are working as well. Simple set up 3 riggers with cheaters placed 5-10 feet above the main line and 2 dipsies on a three setting = just about as many as you want. The salmon are just starting to move into the area. Most fish are still in the deep water(400-650 fow). We will be targeting Salmon in the coming days.

Lake Ontario Fishing Report - Mexico Bay, NY

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

Fishing couldn't be better here in Mexico Bay. The brown trout fishing remains solid and a few salmon are trickling in to the area. Everyday we are seeing fish pushing the 15lb mark. Our average brown trout is between 6.5-7 lbs right now. Mostly a stinger dreamweaver bite right now.

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

The salmon should be moving in soon. Large concentrations of adult Chinooks should be here over the next two weeks. I expect to see a shortened salmon season due to thier late arrival but more fish and bigger fish. If you are fishing with us during the fall LOC derby remember to buy your ticket for a chance at $20,000.00.

Goose season is just around the corner and the geese are growing everyday. Many locations are loaded with young resident birds right now. BROWN TROUT ACTION RED HOT IN MEXICO BAY

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

Well if your looking for browns and looking for a big one. NOW would be the time. We are seeing browns too 15 pounds so far and countless 6-10 lb fish. We are fishing within 5 minutes of the mouth of the Little Salmon river in 55-103 fow depending on temperature.

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

Dennis and Andrea Buck have been fishing with me for a number of years for King salmon during the fall derby. Dennis placed with a king in 2005 with me. They tried early spring fishing with other captains but could'nt get there timing right when the fishing was good and the weather was good. I suggested they try to fish with me in July. Well I think they are sold on July fishing. In 2009 they caught Browns on the first day of there trip and Switched to Kings for the remainder of there trip. In 2010 we started out on browns the first 2 days of there 4 day trip targeted kings on day three and back to browns for day four and in search of a fish for Dennis to get on the leader board. Seeing Andrea was already on the board with a nice brown tipping the scales at 14.04. Well dennis did get a brown that would have made the board but I told him with the Pro-Am going on in sodus that it might not make by Sunday afternoon. Now they are coming back for 7 days of kings in early September and making plans for a longer trip next July.

LLyod Plouff made the trip from Newport , NY to sample the waters of Mexico Bay. He brought along his crew of 2 and if they would have bit much faster we wouldn't have been able to keep up with the pace. Put the lures down and right back up they come with MR. Brown Trout on the end. ITS BEEN FUN.

Lake Ontario Charter Fishing

The Foster family down from Saco, Maine come for there yearly fix of Lake Ontario and had a great trip. Dave [not a foster] Gordie,Harry,Steve,Hank all had a good time. The caught plenty of Browns to take back to Maine and share with friends. They have been with me for 6 years what a bunch. As usual Steve caught the biggest brown of the crew at 13.8 on the DEC scales. Steve is a big fish magnet and doesn't mind going outta turn.

George and Bobby from NJ wanted fish and fish they got. First rod down comes back up with a fat healthy male tipping the scales at 14.5 pounds What a beautiful fish. Big hook jawed male. They lost a couple but managed to get a limit pretty fast.

The trout are really liking silver and green and blk and silver in the early hours then swithching to chartruese and green later in the Bright sun. I have been trying on calmer days to keep the speed down around 1.5 on the moor . That seem to be the key right now. In the rougher water longer leads[40-60] are working. Cheaters are also working very good right now. With the recent west wind pushing the Thermocline deeper look for the kings to show up in that 130 range. The better temp for the Browns has been 65-68 for the bigger ones. The kings will still be in the colder water. 42-46 At this point in the season my dates are filling in pretty good. LAKE ONTARIO GIVES UP A 40 POUND KING

On the north shore of the lake there is a salmon derby called The Great Ontario Salmon Derby. Well yesterday someone weighed in a 40 lb KING. No rumor just fact. You will need big guys to make the leader board right now. The bottom is 33 lbs. When these monster Kings leave the north shore and make there migration to Mexico bay. LOOK OUT! We should see kings over 40 LBS.

The bay right now has alot of browns around. Big browns. We are daily seeing fish to 15 pounds. Alot of good fat healthy browns averaging 5-9 pounds. As the thermocline moves so do the brown trout. The water currents move the bait and the browns are close by. Right now you just need to locate the bait and you can find the fish.

We have been doing well with 10 color lead cores and adding 2-6 ounces of weight. Copper has been working well mostly the 300-400' sections. Divers set on a number three setting are working as are the slide divers. Run cheaters fixed 5 feet above your main line. SS dreamweaver's are doing most of the damage Diehard, green and blue dolphin, And any Green and silver on sunny days with blk/silver, Purple silver, working good early.

Dennis And Andrea Buck wanted to experience good brown trout fishing so this past week they booked 4 days. They got what they wanted they caught and released over 100 brown trout a couple lakers picked up a few salmon and a steelhead. Andrea is currently in 6th place in the summer loc . We had a great time over the past week.

July is by far the best month to be here. Multi-species fishing and some real nice weather. Not many boats on the lake and the fishing couldn't be better.

Fishing continues to be very good in the eastern end of Lake Ontario. The salmon are very deep. Makes getting all the gear down to them. Steelies are here in good size and numbers. Ron P. brought his dad and two sons along for an afternoon trip. We did land kings, steelies and a nice brown to go home with the crew from PA and be shared with friends. His son Justin wanted a king and got one but had to practice on a big steelie with the help of his brother Bryce. Mr. P. Senior got beat up by a king and battled as long as he could take it before getting assistance from the rest of the family. Well fought battle, Copper fish they are the worst!!!

Jon and Mark from CONN. started slow but ended there day with a two man limit of nice kings. We did get one smaller brown that went back and we lost a beautiful steelie that stole my NK diehard spoon. Jon jusy can't get enough so he's coming back in September for another try at kings in the afternoon.

We boated countless little skippy kings, as well as kings to 26 pounds. We managed to land several nice steelies to 12 pounds and a brown that was about 8. With this kind of fishing starting so early look out in July. We should see some very impressive catches over the next couple weeks.

Fishing 230-350 fow in front of the power plant down 130-150 for the kings using all dreamweaver ss green dolphins and 10 color cores as well as 600 coppers, which I ruined two today. Things are pretty quite here on the east end of the lake. Somedays produce good catches of Brown Trout and others we hunt for a few Lakers. Guess we have to pay our dues for all the great fishing in Years past. Some very impressive Brown Trout are being caught though. Fish exceding 15 pounds are being caught on a daily basis. Look for things to pick up as the lake and Mexico bay are setting up nicely. Look right now in the 30-60 foot range using lead core slide divers and down riggers with long leads. Dream weavers spoons are still a trout magnet and any natural colors are sure to produce.

The kings should be around here before too long and with some of the Huge salmon caught already this year look for some true monsters to be lurking the waters on the eastern end. Been busy dealing with a little boat remodeling so haven't been out in a few days but that will change soon.

We are catching a mixed bag this season!!!! Browns , Lakers, Coho's , Rainbows, Steelies, King's and an occasional Landlock. We are finding lakers in places they shouldn't be like in where we are fishing Browns. The browns are fat and healthy which is a good sign. You don't have to go to far off shore to find the rest. We have been fishing 4-20 fow for the browns depending on water clarity and 60- 200 for the rest. Dreamweaver ss in diehard or blk silver have been working for the browns on the boards or riggers. Add a little weight to the board spoons to keep them in the strike zone. Some kings are taking flasher fly combos, but spoons like the dreamweaver Green Dolphin are working real good.

3-5-7 color lead cores are working on the rainbows and steelies with my new secert spoon they just love. Hint (its Bright and the only color you need for steelies). Trolling speed varies depending on species so vary your speed for best results. 1.7-2.7 depending. Well it seems like this is the year of the mixed bag fishing. We are catching lakers, browns, cohos, ings, steelies, rainbows and the occasional atlantic. Today the wind picked up from the west and as I said we need wind! And so did the fishing. We had a very easy limit plus today with cohos, browns rainbows and lakers.

Stephen Wallin brought back his crew for some more Lake Ontario Action and thats what they got. Doubles and triples at times made for a very busy day. Gator stingers off 3,5 color cores and riggers set 12,14,18 did the trick today. A few off the board lines as well with the overcast skies. Mainly 30-50 fow with down speed in the 2.25 range seemed to be best. Still the bright colored stuff is working for the steelies and rainbows.

Spring Has sprung 2010

Well its been a long time getting here but winter is on its way out. That's a fact!! Boy have I been busy over the past few weeks. Between scheduling Charters working on river trips, returning from Missouri after a succesful snow goose hunt with Up North Outdoors in Mound City Missouri and working out details with Mark Hobrock from Muscooten Bay Outfitters for a fall trip to Illinois for some Whitetail hunting.

First of all the river is up and the fishing is really starting too pick up. The fish are starting to move up on the gravel and getting ready for the spawn. The upper river is pretty good and the creeks are filling up with fresh fish out of the lake. Once the Hatchery takes their eggs, they will hold the steelhead in the recovery ponds for a few weeks before they let them go. Look for good late April fishing as the fish normally head out towards the end of April.

The lake fishing is starting out as good as always. Early spring Browns move in to the shallows to feed on schools of bait fish that come in near shore every spring. The Browns will remain near shore for several weeks before starting to move out to deeper water. If spring Trout are on your schedule give me a call to schedule a trip.

The boat is getting in shape for the coming months. It seems I never get enough time to get ready for spring but I am working at it every day. Nothing has changed for 2010 as far as pricing. If fuel does get outta hand I will be forced to make an adjustment in my pricing for 2010.

Spent 3 days in Muddy Missouri chasing snow geese with Up North Outdoors Inc.. All I can say is what a great time we had considering we had tough conditions. If you really want to hunt with a top shelf outfitter give Tracy Northrup a call. He has some of the best places to hunt, great guides and a very professional work ethic. It was great to travel across the country and see so many geese, I mean thousands. Flocks of 50-70 thousand birds. What a site.

Now its time to get back in the swing of things and get ready for my fall trip too Illinois for a monster Whitetail and spend some time in a treestand hunting With Muscooten Bay Outfitters. Mark is a real professional and limits his outfit to no more than 6 hunters on his 12,500 acres of land he owns or leases. I am looking for a buck of a lifetime and Mark assured me that Illinois has plenty of them. I am looking for 4 hunters to join me on this trip so if anyone is interested give me a call or e-mail me directly and I will fill in the details.

Fall 2010 goose hunts are almost gone. I have just a couple September dates open. I can accomadate up to four hunters per hunt so grab a few buddies and get in the schedule for a great upstate NY early season goose hunt.
