2008 Fishing Reports12-29-08 || River Report High Water Plenty of Fish! The recent warm snap has created a high water condition on the salmon river. This can only mean one thing "MORE FISH". Any increase in water flow this time of year means fresh fish in from the lake. It makes it a little tougher wading, but thats no concern from the drift boat. The fishing remains good and should stay this way for the rest of the season. Fresh steelies are entering the river on a daily basis due to flow. We are still doing well under floats using blue, white, pink egg sacs and the pink worm is starting to work well. All the usual winter holding spots have fish, school house, wire hole, trestle pool, frig. The lower end will have alot of fresh fish and a mix in the mid part of the river. The snow is a non-issue at this time so getting around is no problem, and the parking lots are all clear. Lake fishing dates and river dates are still available but some of the best dates are going fast, weekends fill up quick as always. TIGHT LINES

The fishing is not slowing down any and after the recent increase in water flow more fresh steelhead have moved into the river. The water is now down to a more fishable level from the shore but hasn't stopped us from fishing from the boat.
We have been fishing the upper part of the river which has a ton of steelhead in it. Egg sacs seem to be the bait of choice but beads and pink worms are working as well along with a few custom flies. Plugging seems to be hot and cold depending on the day.
We are continuing our winter special till March so get out of the house and get up here so I can get your picture up on the internet. We have several days open in January and Febuary. Lake dates are filling which is good, several of my regular clients are rescheduling and I am getting a few new people. Shows start soon so give me a call, we can arrange it all. See You On The Water
PAT 12.15.08 || River Report Salmon River NY Fishing Report
The fishing on the salmon river continues to be good. winter has set in and the fish have moved into their normal wintering spots. The river flow is up to 1800 plus run off which makes wading a little more difficult. We continue to fish from the boat throughout the river system. Blue,Pink, and White egg sacs are produing fish on a daily basis. Float fishing is a very effective way to fish right now. With the water up fresh fish are coming in everyday. This will provide some very good fishing over the coming weeks.
Still the top of the river holds the most fish but the most pressure, with the warm weather we are having it is an excellent time to get out and give the river a try .
The lake season will be here sooner than we think, so its time to think about making your plans for the best fishing dates. I do currently have a few good days open in August and September so call too get in the schedule. I will be attending shows soon 1st one is in January in Salem N.H. so don't wait. Spring River dates are going as well if you enjoy catching big post spawn steelhead give us a call April is almost here. TIGHT LINES

The fishing for steelhead continues to be good. The colder weather has slowed things down a bit. We are having a warm up and the flow in the area tribs is coming up which will bring fish in from the lake. Some of the area tribs are going to be fishing very good over the next couple days.
We are still fishing with blue, white and pink egg sacs, trout beads and back trolling plugs. There are a few fish in the faster water but the mother load is setting up in the deeper holes. The upper river has the most fish and most fishing pressure while the mid river has the least pressure and a few less fish you can get away from the crowds. The snow is starting to fall and will become an issue in the up coming weeks. With the drift boat we can avoid the snow and cover alot of water with the least amount of effort. 1 - drift boat trip and a nights lodging $170.00 pp Or book any lake charter and recieve $75.00 off a drift boat trip offer good 12-15-08 to 3-30-09 TIGHT LINES
Red 11.22.08 || River Report The Fish Wanted to Bite Today
Today Adam and his father had a good day on the river. We got a late start due to cold weather but it made no difference. The fish wanted to bite today. We fish the top of the river with eggs today and we had fish in most spots. Adam was up from Florida for some deer hunting and wanted to do some steelhead fishing while he was here. We had both fresh fish and some with a little color. Its not to late to get in on this great fishing, we are expecting a warming trend over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I am also filling in my last few days in August for the lake. If your thinking about doing it call me asap. Spring river dates are filling in pretty fast as well. Try a day on the lake in April and a day on the river. I am still offering lodging at $20.00 per person per night. For the rest of the winter TIGHT LINES
Red 11.20.08 || River Report Great Day on the Salmon River
Today was a good day on the river. We caught several nice steelhead with one tipping the scale at around 13 pounds. It was blue egg sac day for us. Jum Haus, Mark,Uncle Paul and the new guy Sal toughed out the conditions for a great trip. Cold start then bright sun the heavy snow. What a day. Jim and Mark fished with my good friend Tom Burke and Uncle Paul and Sal fished on my boat. We caught several steelhead and one nice brown trout. Most of the people fishing around us where catching some fish as well. Here are some photos of yesterday and today

Red 11.19.08 || River Report Steelhead
The fishing over the past week has continued to be very good. The steelhead are spread out from top to bottom on the river and in every type of water. That will change over the next few weeks as the water cools to normal temp for this time of year. Floats, with beads or blue egg sacs have been very good. Bottom bouncing has produced alot of fish as well. We are doing alot of back trolling with plugs in some of the spots we can put them out. Hot shots and rapalas are working the best.
The river is up right now so wade safe and try a drift boat when the water is up. Its safer and you can fish alot more river. With the heavy snow on its way it might be the best bet. I fish with Ron and his son Bryce on Monday.Bryce showed the steelhead who was the boss. He is only 12 but fished better than most people can ever hope too. Today it was the Italian connection. I assisted guide Lou on a two boat trip and what a trip. These guys can fish. No ROOKIES here. They have chased steelhead from east to west and enjoy every minute. Here are some Photos of our trips.

Red 11.11.08 || River Report Steelhead Fishing Very Good
The steelhead fishing has been very good over the past week. Fishing pressure on the weekends has been very high, but we are finding fish in just about every spot. The water is back down to a lower level and has made the fishing very good. The weather has been great one day and challenging the next. We fished in near white out conditions on Monday and rain and snow on Tuesday. Monday was a little tough landing only 2 out of 6 fish, but Tuesday Bob was redhot. He had 8 fish before Sam could get his first. We ended the trip going 6 for 13. A much better day.
The blue and white egg sacs have been working the best. Trout beads are working very good as well. We have been doing alot of plugging as well and we had a late coho caught on Tuesday. Copper hot shots back trolled are working good. Fishing floats with trout beads or bottom bouncing egg sacs has been very productive.
The fish are in every different type of water, tailouts mid slower sections and in the heat, {the fast water} put in your time and you will catch fish. Fishing from the drift boat lets you cover all types of water and gets you down the river safely. If you have never seen the Salmon River, this is the best way. TIGHT LINES
Red 11.07.08 || River Report Steelhead Still Biting Really Good
Spent the day with Jimmy and Peter on the river fishing various tactics for steelies and I think we had a good day because we lost count of how many we caught. Hope you are ready for next year. On Thursday I fished with Eric and Ted Knight. Two great guys that know how to appreciate good weather, great scenery and a few fish. We never put one in the net but had our chances. Eric and Ted both grew up in Vermont fishing all the same places I did when I was young.
The fishing has been good from top to bottom. Every spot and every style is producing fish. Blue egg sacs are working very good as well as glo roe 10 mm trout beads. Plugging from the boat has been very good as well. TIGHT LINES
Red 11.04.08 || River Report Steelhead Fishing In full Swing
The steelhead fishing over the past 2 days has been very good. The weather has been good and we have battled with as many fish as you could want. The water level being high has added a challenge to things, but the river is back down and that should make things a little easier.
We have had most luck with egg sacs and estaz flies in pink white and blue. I have been spending most of the day on the lower river. Back in the drift boat with Jimmy and Peter from Long Island for another day. These two guys have battled with over 25 fish each in the past two days. Each day I have tried to teach them a different style of fishing on the big river and they have learned a ton. Tomorrow we are going to plug and float fish. TIGHT LINES
Red 11.02.08 || River Report Salmon River and Tribs Running HighThe Salmon River and area tribs are running at a very high level which make it tough to wade but the fishing from the drift boat has been great. Loads of fresh steelhead are entering the rivers and a few browns mixed in. We have had many double digit hook up days and have landed steelhead to 15 pounds. The best action has been in the schoolhouse pool, the sportsman pool and in the lower river using trout beads in glow roe or peach fuze colors under floats blue and pink egg sacs are working well along with egg pattern flies. With the higher flows in the big river it has made it tough too land these fall steelies. With the drift boat at least we can chase them if need be. I would expect to see some very good steelhead fishing over the coming months. With the high water it brings fresh fish in everyday and keeps the fish moving and presents the best conditions possible for steelhead fishing. I still have some days open in November and December if you are interested. The August 2009 lake dates are almost gone so give me a call if you are looking to book a trip TIGHT LINES
Red 10.29.08 || River Report Salmon River Full of SteelheadThe Salmon River and the area tribs are running a little high right now due to all the rain and snow. Yes snow !! We have seen as much as 16 inches on the ground in the Oswego Jefferson County area. But the river is full of steelhead right now and should only get better. We have been doing well on Blue and Pink egg sacs under floats and bottom bouncing. They are starting to hit plugs back trolled as well. The fish are spread through out the river. Fish the deeper pools up river and the fast water pockets through the DSR and up through town. I expect the fishing to be very good over the next few weeks until the water cools. At this high flow, it will bring fresh fish in every day and continue to make for some very good days. With the higher flow the fish have many places to hide so cover alot of water and wade careful. Wading at this flow can be very dangerous. Consider seeing the river from a drift boat, It allows you to cover the most water and is much safer. Days are pretty full in November but I do have a few open so give me a call. 2 person Drift boat trip plus one night lodging 340.00 TIGHT LINES
Red 10.10.08 || River Report Trout Fishing Gettin' GOOD
The fishing on the Salmon River and local tribs has improved on a daily basis. We have been catching some really nice brown trout and steelhead every time we are on the river. John and Nancy spent the day with me fishing over this past weekend, We didn't do so well on the salmon but nancy caught a nice steelhead and John caught brown trout over 15 pounds in full fall colors. We continue to well up river on the salmon and on the low end for trout. We are using white, blue and chartruese egg sac's and any egg pattern fly in the same colors. Most of our fishing has been done on the fly rods but we are getting the float rods ready to go in action. I believe that this will be an excellent year for trout by what I am seeing right now. Our 2009 lake schedule is filling up pretty good even with the dismal economy. If you are thinking of getting in the book for 09 call asap to schedule your trip. I will be offering a winter steelhead special. 2 people 8 hour guided trip 1 night lodging 170.00 based on 2 people. look around I don't think you can beat the price. We provide all the equipment. These birds will be within 5yards of your gun barrel, what a blast. Try steelhead one day and goose hunting the next. TIGHT LINES
Red 10.05.08 || River Report Steelhead fishing improving dailyThe steelhead fishing continues too improve everyday. The river is coming down too 500 cfs and things should be on fire. Low water pushes the fish in to a smaller area and makes them easier to find. Try the fast water for the best steelhead action use egg patterns and cover ground. Stop in FAT NANCY'S in Pulaski for all the tackle and info you will every need. The lake season is filling fast so give us a call I only have a few days left for salmon on the lake so get in the schedule asap too get a great date. TIGHT LINES
Red 10.04.08 || River Report Salmon in full swing; Steelhead showing upThe salmon fishing is as good as it gets right now. We have seen monster kings moving in the river everyday. I assisted fellow guide RAY ELLIS in the dsr on Friday and what a day it was Joe, Bill and Alec each landed huge kings and had many shots at fish that got away. We are seeing several steelhead every day, I know of at least one fish that weighted 17 pounds being caught in the last few days. The run will continue to be steady and should be good for 2 more weeks at least. The steelhead fishing will improve as the water cools. If you are thinking of a trip call asap too get in on the action. The best fishing has been in the upper river. Look for the salmon on the gravel as they are in full spawning swing right now. Use big streamer flies or comets to provoke a strike. Egg patterns are working well for the steelhead. The water has been at 750cfs but wll be going down soon to 335 cfs TIGHT LINES
Red 10.01.08 || River Report FALL IS HERE SO ARE THE SALMONThe nite fishing for salmon has been good over the past few weeks. Dave and Dennis were out with me a few nites ago and got to see how kings bite in the dark. Moments of silence interrupted by minutes of choas. The Salmon River and some area tribs have salmon and trout in them very heavy. We have been in the drft boat doing most of our trips. We are concentrating our efforts on the upper part of the Salmon River. Right now the Salmon is running at 750 cfs plus run off, which is a good flow and most effectively fished from the boat. I had Steve Holsten from Arkansas out for a few days. He is a guide on the White River for Trophy brown trout. He experienced what salmon on a fly rod is really like. The fishing for salmon will continue to improve over the next few weeks and the steelhead should continue to enter the river as the water cools. The brown trout are showing up as well and I have seen some very nice fish in the river. The lake boat is being put away until next year and my schedule is filling up for 2009 very fast. If you are thinking of fishing with us in '09 give me a call. The steelhead schedule is filling up as well for this fall call to schedule a trip. This should be another great season for winter steelhead and fall long distance brown trout trips . TIGHT LINES
Red 09.16.08 || River Report THE RIVER SEASON STARTSOver the past few days there has been a big push of fish up the river. Kings and Cohos are moving real good in the lower part of the river and should continue too be for the next few weeks. Try the ball park or town pool drift egg flies or egg sacs for the best results. Yesterday we where kept off the lake so I headed for the river , I hooked up at least 75 times and landed over 30 fish. It was truly like fishing in a barrel. The lake is starting too slow down and the fishing is spotty. We are seeing a few salmon still but not too many. Some days are real good and some are so so. We will be on the lake for a few more weeks then concentrate on the river everyday. TIGHT LINES
Red 09.08.08 || Lake Report THE SALMON ARE HERESalmon fishing right now couldn't get better. We are seeing some very large fish everyday. Ask Mike Cramer about his potential WORLD RECORD caught while fishing with us. Mr. Cramer was spending a little time on the water with his buddies and as luck would have it he reeled in a 34.10 fish to be determined coho. We where trolling A white double crush glow SPINDOCTOR and a Glow mirage A-TOM-IK trolling fly on a Scotty downrigger with a Shark cannon ball when the big one hit. This cobo has produced many fish over the last few days off sandy pond. The fish are in temp any where from 70 to 105 feet of water. The copper rods have been working very good as well. We only use A-TOM-MIK trolling copper because it out performs any other out there. Scott Truemans Wife Fran Placed 20th in the fall LOC derby which was another big fish. That fish was also caught on an A-TOM-MIK FLY . We only us the highest quality flies on the market and they work. The fishing should be very good this season right too the end of the month and the nite fishing should be in full swing in another week. The big river has a few kings in and should get better over the next few days. I am booking up pretty quick so get in the book asap and don't forget to make plans for 2009 AUGUST is filling fast as well as May and June when we see alot of brown trout. TIGHT LINES
Red 08.26.08 || Lake Report MEXICO BAY FULL OF KINGSThe kings are here and alot of them. We are fishing 65 to 100 feet of water using SPIN DOCTORS and A-TOM-IK flys White is hot right now trailing hammer flys ,ace flys , and glow big fin flys . Today we had Rich Wallace and crew up for a 8 hour day and boated 15 kings and 2 trout, Plus we lost 7 others to boot. This is truly salmon fishing at its best. I only have a few dates left so give me a call to get in on this action. The Salmon River has a few kings being caught every day and some of the area creeks are producing as well. Fish the low end of the river for the best results and get ready for the night fishing as it is fast approaching. TIGHT LINES
Red 08.19.08 || Lake Report THE KING ARE HEREIf you want salmon now is the time. The salmon have showed up in big numbers and are biting. We are now on a steady salmon diet until the boat goes to bed for winter. The salmon have been in 100-200 feet of water off the Salmon River and off the power plant. Trolling has been very good using SPIN DOCTORS and ATOMIK trolling flies. The green spin doctor or the hammer time have been very good trailing green crinkle or hammer flies and the ace fliy has been very good as well. Dreamweaver spook patterns are working very well for spoons. Scott and Francine Truemann Have a fish currently on the leader board in the fall LOC derby that was caught while guest aboard the Redline. Scott is accustom too big kings. Last year they put two on the board and 4 years ago he caught the biggest king of the year on the boat. Four year repeat customers and their 5 year old son was along to watch his mom reel in the trophy. The derby ends Labor day so call now too get in on the action and take a chance at $20,000.00 for catching a fish. The river has a few kings in it but not enough too target at this point. The river is very high for this time of the year and thats why the fish are there. Don't expect them to last when the water drops. We are scheduling trips for fall salmon and steelhead as we speak. Days are filling in pretty good so give me a call if you are interested. TIGHT LINES
Red 08.10.08 || Lake Report THE KINGS ARE HERE & BROWNS STILL BITINGThe salmon fishing over the last few days has picked up . We are targeting salmon every day now and some fish over thirty pounds have been caught by anglers. The kings are moving around but the most stable fishing for us has been in 400 to 550 feet of water of the power plant. Fish have been down 95 to 155 on the riggers and the divers are working from 295 to 335 using spin doctors and A-TOM-MIK Flies. The chrome SPINDOCTOR with the Green crinkle fly or the White Spindoctor with the HAMMER FLY have been taking there fair share. 400 and 500 foot sections of A-TOM-MIK copper trolling wire have also been very good. The Diehard spoon has been pretty steady off the riggers as well. Joe and John had a good day landing a couple good kings a nice steelhead a coho and a bunch of browns in 110 feet of water on Sunday 8-9-08 on a 6 hour trip. The browns have still been there everyday but we look for this action too slow down as we focus mainly on kings for the next 6 weeks or so. They are still liking the copper sections and hitting spoons pretty good. A good trick this time of year is to put a SPINDOCTOR and an A-TOM-MIK fly down if they are a little stubborn it most likely will get them too bite. Days are filling in for the lake but I still have some great days open in September so call soon. If you miss out on the lake boat action you still have time for a night time king trip or a river float trip. TIGHT LINES
Red 07.30.08 || Lake Report Brown trout biting; Kings on their way!The brown trout fishing in the bay is still very good. We are managing to get our fair share just about every trip. They seem to be liking the frog and chartruese colors more and more every day. We have been catching them in 75-100 FOW depending on wind direction. Divers out 280-325 have been good as well on 20 pound malin wire and 300-400 foot sections of A-TOM-MIK of copper trolling wire have been our best rigs some days. When the trout stop biting put out a copper and get a few extra fish. The salmon have been very inconsistent to this point in the season. They have been caught from 120-400 FOW and on no set pattern but but A-TOM-MIK flys #29, #41 and #132 have all been working well behind green, white or chartruese SPIN DOCTORS. We have had some good success with several of the DREAMWEAVER spoons in the 42nd and Black Spook colors as well as frog patterns fished off the riggers or wire divers. 400-500 foot sections of copper trolling wire are working well too. We have had some good catches of lake trout in the past few days as well. 135 feet of water has been the best. The river season is fast approaching and things are getting pretty busy , call asap if you are looking for a river trip this fall or want to do a nite time king trip. TIGHT LINES
Red 07.25.08 || Lake Report Brown Trout fishing as good as it gets KINGS are moving inThe brown trout fishing continues to be very good. The cold water has kept the fishing close to shore and not too deep. We have seen some very nice fish caught over the past few weeks. Dreamweaver super slim spoons in blk/slvr and chicken wing patterns have been working very well. Most of the trout are being caught on down riggers and copper trolling wire in 50 to 80 fow. Several fish have been caught in the bay up to 18 pounds with many in the 10 to 14 pound range. Look for the brown trout fishing too slow down over the coming weeks as the salmon and steelhead take front stage. We should see a big increase in salmon numbers over the next 7 to 10 days. Some real big fish have been caught throughout the lake this summer and the summer loc derby was won by a 31 pounder. I do have a few days open in the next few weeks so if you are interested in fishing for these monsters give us a call. I think we will see fish this year up to 40 pounds from what I have heard already. TIGHT LINES

Sorry for the delayed report; BEEN BUSY. The past few weeks have been nothing but out of this world. Limit catches every day and some real nice size browns. Just about every day for the past few weeks we have seen some very nice fish coming too the net. We should have a few on the derby board but once again no tickets. We had a youngster get beat by a nice steelhead the other day which was to bad, it was a very nice fish. They are moving around alot right now but we have been able too make the right moves ourselves to stay on them every day. We went in search of salmon the other day and I can't tell you the outcome until after the derbies and pro-am are over.
Most of the fish are coming on michigan stingers fished weighted on the boards off the leadcore or on the riggers. We are still getting a few on the surface stick baits as well. Blk/ Silver smithwicks and Thundersticks. Three colors of leadcore have been good and five colors as well. Stretch behind the riggers 30-90 back. Mixed veggies, kervorkian, tuxedo, and one of my all time faxorites a solid red mooselook wobbler fished high in the spread has caught a ton of browns mainly in the mid morning. We have been fishing from 28-68 fow east of the Little Salmon has been the best for us.

The brown trout fishing in the bay has hit a high point for the time being. While we wait for the thermocline to set up expect consistent catches of bigger browns than we have to this point in the season. The water is still cold so we are fishing close to shore using planer boards and shallow set down riggers. Same stuff is still working. The west winds have brought the bait in and some very nice brown trout to 14 pounds. We are also finding a few steelhead mixed in. Orange and gold number 9 Rapalas are working well along with the Smithwicks off the boards and the Natural colored Michigan stingers are working off the riggers. The salmon have moved in shore as well with a few steelhead. Fishing for salmon off the power plant from 40 to 100 feet of water using the number 41 A-TOM-MIK fly behind green and white attractors is working well. Fish have been from the surface down to 60 feet. Lead core and copper are both producing fish in the mix. Wire divers out 150 have been good as well. Recently some king salmon have moved into the area so we will be able to go after some early kings. On light gear these things are a blast! Just imagine a 15 pound mint silver king on 10 pound test line and light action rods. Sounds like a fight too me. The night time walleye fishing is also heating up. Red 04.26.08 || River/Lake Report Steelhead Red Hot! Lake Brown Trout Still Biting
The fishing on the Salmon River for steelhead couldn't be any better. The fishing pressure over the last couple days has slowed things down a bit but we are seeing fish every where we stop and fish. Casting egg sacks or pink worms is working very good and the fish are hitting hot shot plugs back trolled very good as well. This fishing should last until mid may before it comes to an end. River special right now is two person drift boat trip and one nights stay for 325.00 . CALL ASAP Lake Report
The brown trout fishing on the lake continues to be very good. We are still fishing near shore 12-25 fow using planer boards and shallow set down riggers. Michigan stingers in chartreuse and silver and green and silver are working well. The power plant area seems too be the best. We stil have some days open in May and June if you are interested. I am currently taking reservations for night time king salmon trips in september and fall salmon and steelhead trips in October. The days fill in quick for the night time salmon trips so call ASAP. Until next time TIGHT LINES
Red 04.19.08 || River/Lake Report Lake Ontario starts off with a bang and the Salmon River is LOADED with SteelheadLake Report
We have had some great fishing over the winter and it continues to be red hot. The salmon river is full of steelhead and the secret spots are choked with steelhead. Over the past week we have divided our time between the lake and the rivers. The near shore fishing for brown trout has been awesome; seems the browns have been waiting for us all winter. We have mainly been running small stick baits near shore in the bay and catching some real nice fish. The conditions have been great warm days with very little wind. Salmon River Report
The Salmon River has been producing some very healthy fish as well. With the water being high we have had less bank anglers and more river to ourselves. Back trolling plugs have been the best in the big river while the beads and pink worm are working good in the other spots we have been fishing. The other day I went out in the afternoon for some fun fishing and managed too hook and fight 14 steelhead myself. Some real nice fish. Tight Lines Red |
